Magic Mouse Windows driver + app for scrolling
Tap to click
The Magic Mouse Utilities support 1, 2 and 3 finger taps as an alternative to the noisy clicks.
1 finger taps
- All 1 finger taps are only performed if no other fingers touch the mouse surface,
except those fingers in the ignore areas (2) and (4), more here. - In addition, that tap has to touch be in the tap area (9), more here.
This can be turned off, see Tap filters / Use Tap area below.
Left, middle and right tap areas
1 finger taps can be performed on the left, middle or right side.
Click the Tap areas button to configure these virtual areas on your mouse surface.
Each area can have it's own tap function. Use the related drop down menus to configure the function.
If you like to perform the same tap function on all areas:
- Activate the left and right taps only (deactivate the middle tap).
- Assign the same tap function on the left and right area.
Double tap to drag
To drag an item or do a multi-selection, you need to hold the (primary) mouse button.
- To hold a mouse button, double tap and hold the tap, then drag the mouse.
- To release the mouse button, lift the finger. It's the same as on laptop touchpads.
Note: Double tap to drag holds the related mouse button of the tap area. This way you can hold any mouse button via double tap.
Tap sensitivity
You can adjust the 1 finger tap sensitivity with the slider. Note this is only for 1 finger taps.
2 and 3 finger taps are not affected by this setting and always work on the highest sensitivity.
2 + 3 finger taps
2 and 3 finger taps have only a configurable tap function (and tap filters, see below).
Tap filters
To show the tap filters turn on the Show filters checkbox. Use these filters to prevent accidental taps.
Ignore click
If enabled, any mouse clicks (for the related 1, 2 or 3 finger taps) will be ignored. Us this setting to prevent accidental clicks if you tap too hard. Off by default.
Filter touches in ignore areas
If enabled, any touches in the Ignore areas (2) and (4) will be ignored by the related taps. On by default for 1 and 2 finger taps.
Use tap area
If enabled, only taps within the tap to click area (9) are performed. Use this setting to prevent accidental taps. On by default for 1 finger taps.
Tap functions
To assign a function to a tap area, use the related drop down menu:
Function | Description |
---|---|
Primary click | Performs a primary (left) mouse button click when tapped. |
Secondary click | Performs a secondary (right) mouse button click when tapped. |
Primary + secondary click | Performs both, primary + secondary (left + right) mouse button clicks together when tapped. |
Middle click | Performs a middle mouse button click when tapped. |
Backward navigation | Navigates backward when tapped (technically it's a 4th mouse button click). |
Forward navigation | Navigates forward when tapped (technically it's a 5th mouse button click). |
Anti-Virus Scanners and Endpoint-Protection issues
Every Windows computer has usually an anti-virus scanner or endpoint protection running.
If no 3rd part scanner has been installed it is built-in Windows Defender. The Magic Utilities never had any issues with this free and reliable protection.
Testing
When we release a new version of the Magic Utilities we test all components on VirusTotal that they are not flagged as false/positive.
False/Positives
Unfortunately sometimes one (of more than 60 commercial anti-virus scanners) does make trouble. Suddenly, months after a Magic Utilities release, a component of the Magic Utilities is flagged as malware or is simply removed. These false/positives are beyond our control and caused by the anti-virus scanner itself.
Troubleshooting options
- If possible, consider to uninstall your anti-virus scanner. You would save money, have less troubles and automatically well protected with built-in Windows Defender.
- If that's not possible, add a folder exemption or exclusion. Make sure that the active anti-virus scanner ignores all files in all sub-folders of folders:
- "C:\Program Files\MagicUtilities" or
- "C:\Program Files (x86)\MagicUtilities" and
- "C:\ProgramData\MagicUtilities"
Now reinstall the Magic Utilities, downloads are here.
Report your issue to your anti-virus scanner manufacturer
Consider to report your anti-virus scanner issue with its manufacturer. Lookup their specific help on how to do this.

Magic Mouse not scrolling on Windows
This is a guide on how to fix the scrolling for any Magic Mouse model on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Connect your Magic Mouse on Windows
In order to make your Apple Magic Mouse work on Windows, first pair it as a Bluetooth device.
After Bluetooth paring the Magic Mouse "just works" as a basic mouse. You can move the mouse pointer and do a left or right click.
Where is the "Magic"?
You'll soon realize the Magic Mouse is missing some magic on Windows: Scrolling doesn't work, there is no middle click and you have no idea of the battery state of your Magic Mouse, not to mention back/forward navigation in your web browser or changing Windows 10 virtual desktops.
Windows device driver "Magic"
The "Magic" is actually not happening within the Magic Mouse itself but in software. You need a special Windows driver which translates the raw touch data into HID mouse events.
Download and installation
Simply download the Magic Utilities setup installer and with a few clicks our driver let your Magic Mouse scroll on Windows.
Magic Mouse Utilities application
With the "Magic Mouse Utilities" application you can adjust and customize many features of our Magic Mouse driver for Windows.

Our help pages offer detailed help for most settings. In addition most application dialogs have a button. Also check our frequently asked questions page.

Scrolling and swipes
Long story short: To scroll start slow, to swipe act fast.
How scrolling works
If you touch the Magic Mouse surface with one or two fingers and move your finger(s) slowly an accumulated threshold distance over time, our driver switches to scroll-mode. Now scroll as fast as you like, scroll-mode stays active as long as you lift all fingers.
Accidental scrolling
It may happen that you rest your fingers on the mouse surface and move them unintentionally. If it's more than the threshold distance the driver turns on scroll mode. If this happens to you, lift all fingers to turn scrolling off.
- Adjust that threshold distance with the Sense slider to avoid accidental scrolling.
How swiping works
To swipe you need to lift all fingers. Now touch the surface and move your finger(s) fast and lift them again. A swipe is triggered only if the distance between touch reports was far enough. Actually you need to flick your finger(s).
Accidental swiping
It may happen that you like to scroll but start to fast and trigger a swipe instead.
- Adjust that swipe trigger distance with the Sense slider to make swiping easier or to avoid accidental scrolling.
Technical details
The surface of a Magic Mouse is basically a very sensitive touchpad, it is in fact the very same as a Magic Trackpad, but made of acrylic plastic.
The slightest touch of any finger, or even just hovering 1 millimeter above the surface, will create a constant stream of touch data transmitted wirelessly via Bluetooth to the computer.
There are 90 touch reports per second for a maximum of 6 fingers, which is about 9.5 kByte or 76 kBit per second. That was internet modem speed back in the 90's.
This data is processed by our driver and translated into mouse scroll events to emulate real scroll wheel(s)..
If you always rest your finger(s) on the surface, you drain the battery much quicker. To save battery, touch the mouse only at the sides in case you only like to move the mouse pointer.
Advanced touch settings
The Advanced touch settings menu item might be hidden. Either:
- Press and hold the shift key while clicking the Settings menu item or
- While the "Magic Utilities" application window is visible, press ctrl+alt+S.
Meaning and units
The internal Touch Engine Settings are not really public even you can access it. We put them only there to help people with special requirements, so do not go wild here.
If things go wrong, reset with Default settings.
If you hover over the setting you get a short hint was it does. The hint starts with the unit in [] braces:
- [px] = absolute touch surface "pixel"
- [ms] = milliseconds
- [%] = relative to the touch surface dimension
- [01] = on / off toggle

User interface
Don't show this dialog again.
Most dialogs have a Don't show again checkbox at the bottom. If you select it, this dialog will not be shown again. Note:
- These settings are currently not shared between the individual Magic Utilities applications.
- If you perform Settings > Default settings in the Magic Utility application, all dialogs will be shown again.
Warning and Error dialogs
Most critical dialogs have an icon toolbar at the bottom which helps you to contact us in case you need support:
- Copies the current dialog as text to the clipboard.
You can use Ctrl+V to paste that dialog into an email or contact form. - Copies the current dialog as graphic screenshot to the clipboard.
You can use Ctrl+V to paste that dialog into an email but not into our contact form. - Opens the Send feedback dialog.

Gestures
Clicks
So we reworked how clicks are performed to match the native click handling.
- Right clicks are always single finger clicks on the right side of your mouse.
There is a new Middle click dropdown selector with four modes which should cover all possible user preferences.

For Bluetooth pairing no additional software is required, it is fully handled by Windows.
There is no need to install the Magic Utilities to pair your device.
Select your Magic Mouse model:
Prepare for pairing
For fastest pairing, turn off Bluetooth on all other nearby devices.
This includes mobile phones, laptops and desktop computers as well as Bluetooth speakers.
- Make sure you have 2 fresh AA batteries inserted at the bottom of your Magic Mouse.
Bring your mouse into pairing mode
- At the bottom of the mouse, turn your Magic Mouse off and back on again.
- Wait until the little green light above the power switch is blinking.
- Make sure your Magic Mouse is charged. A new mouse is already charged by Apple otherwise charging for 10 minutes is enough.
- Unplug your Magic Mouse from any cable.
Bring your mouse into pairing mode
- At the bottom of the mouse, turn your Magic Mouse off and back on again.
Pair your Magic Mouse
- Double-click the Bluetooth icon in the Windows taskbar. If you can't see the Bluetooth icon,
click on the + symbol below for detailed instructions.- Click on the little up arrow on the right side of the taskbar.
- If there is still no Bluetooth icon, it might be removed from the taskbar icons.
- Search Windows for Bluetooth settings or Add device or refer to your Windows Help System on how to add a device.
- On Windows 10 select Settings > Devices or
- On Windows 11 select Settings > Bluetooth & devices
- Select Add device or Add Bluetooth or other device.
- Select Bluetooth.
- Select your Magic Mouse from the devices listed; it can take a little while until the mouse appears.
- Follow the instructions.
If a numeric code is requested while pairing, enter 0000 (4 times zero).
Verify pairing
In Windows 10, sometimes your device is paired, but is not working.
In Settings > Devices make sure your device is listed in the Mouse, keyboard & pen section.
If it's listed in the Other devices section, it won't work.
- Delete your device from Other devices and wait a bit.
- Disable the Bluetooth radio
- Enable the Bluetooth radio again.
- Pair your device again.
- Double-check if it's now appearing in the Mouse, keyboard & pen section.
Once the Magic Mouse is paired, it should work as a generic mouse.
Moving your mose moves the cursor. Left and right clicks can be performed by clicking the left or right side of the mouse.
If you can move the mouse pointer on the screen, it's time to install the Magic Utilities.
Note: If pairing doesn't work in the first place, installing the Magic Utilities does not help either.
In case you have constant Bluetooth issues, follow this comprehensive guide.
